Several years ago, I came across a baby picture of my father (true story, here) wearing nothing but a diaper and his twin gun holsters, a pistol on each hip. He looked pretty pleased with himself, too, which may have been the result of his having been allowed to go outside and play in what was clearly his favorite outfit. In other pictures he was sporting the whole outfit, cowboy boots, hat and all. Other than how ridiculous and cute he looked, what struck me most was how universal that image is. I would wager that a large percent of today's adult American men spent some portion of their childhood pretending to be a cowboy, wearing western wear, and watching their western apparel-clad heroes on television.
Of course, growing up and out of cowboy boots is a part of life for most, as the demands of real life tend to refocus one's attention away from a fantasy life of cowboys and Indians. However, an affinity for western apparel doesn't need to end when those long afternoons of make-believe in the back yard do. Incorporating western wear into your everyday wardrobe is something that can be done in such a way that you don't feel as if you're playing dress up, and others will appreciate your unique and personal style, rather than wondering why you dress like a cowboy all the time.
To add elements of western wear into your life, start small. Find a western belt buckle that you really like, for example, and combine that with your normal everyday clothes. Obviously, a pair of cowboy boots are a great way to do this, as those are common from coast to coast whether there's a horse in sight or not. Other items, such as cowboy hats, pearl snap shirts and good old blue jeans are also western wear items that will look great in combination with the rest of your wardrobe.
You don't need to have items that look like they belong on a ranch to celebrate western style. Many of the decorative elements of western apparel such as elaborate stitching and leather inlays can be displayed on clothing or accessories you wear or carry on a daily basis. After all, these decorative elements don't have to be a Texas Star or a coiled rope! You can have anything from purely aesthetic designs to butterflies! Ultimately, the way you dress is an expression of yourself, how you feel that day, or what you like, so have fun with it!
