For many young people, particularly those in their 20s, vintage and thrift store shops are their primary source of clothing. Along with that love of vintage and thrift clothing has come a resurgence of western wear, and as many youngsters are discovering an affinity for western apparel from decades past, they are once again making the look quite stylish, and bringing it back to the foreground of fashion.
But if you're not a kid anymore, it's quite possible that sifting through racks and racks of clothing at a thrift store no longer appeals to you. The look however, you probably still like. So why not check out some of the great classic western wear available in western apparel shops (both the brick-and-mortar types as well as the ones found online)? You still get that great vintage look, but in a quality product that will withstand the test of time. These are all things "the kids" would approve of, right?
So what is a good point-of-reference in regard to what styles are "in" and what the "kids" are wearing? Well, you could probably just look at what's featured in fashion magazines, but ultimately, even that is determined by what glides down the runway in New York, Milan and Paris. Granted, those of us who consider ourselves "normal people" aren't prancing around the grocery store in runway couture. But elements of what's hot at Fashion Week manifest themselves in scaled-down versions suitable for Middle America.
Recently in Paris, fashion house Hermes showcased its 2009 spring/summer collection designed by Jean-Paul Gaultier. And guess what? It's all western wear-themed. Gaultier's reasoning for such a theme is to pay homage to Hermes' roots as a saddle maker. Who knew that's how they got their beginnings? Recurring items in the collection included crocodile-skin jackets and bustiers, fringed ponchos, and floppy sand-color suede hats. Many other accessories such as tall leather cowboy boots and soberly cut leather bags, remained faithful to the classic Hermes style while clearly addressing the roots of American western apparel.
